Ancient Origins (6th Century BC)
Originally founded as Apollonia Pontica by Greek colonists from Miletus around 610 BC, Sozopol is one of the oldest towns on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The city was named after Apollo, the Greek god of light, music, and prophecy, and quickly became a major trading hub in the ancient world.
Thracian Roots
Archaeological discoveries reveal that the area was inhabited by Thracian tribes long before Greek colonization. These ancient peoples left behind numerous artifacts, including the famous Thracian gold treasures that can be seen in local museums today.
Roman and Byzantine Periods
Under Roman rule, the city flourished as an important port and cultural center. During the Byzantine era, Sozopol became known as Sozopolis (meaning "City of Salvation"), and many of the early Christian churches were built during this period.
